Operating System Management

Details
Since Windows 10, the focus of new operating systems has shifted from versions and OS service packs to new build versions. Nowadays, different Windows 10 builds are to be considered like different operating systems.

The new feature of Operating System Management enables you to choose which Windows 10 OS builds you want to deploy and which software packages are allowed to install on those builds.

Admin Page
The new features can be found on the Admin-Site under Operating Systems:
  • Scan for new Operating Systems
  • Make Operating Systems "managed" (f.e. allows Software Distribution)
  • Make Operating Systems available for OS Deplyoment (different Provisioning Templates for different Windows 10 builds possible)

Scan for new operating System
Before we can manage your operating systems we need to know which OS builds are in use in your environment. five(9)s Console helps you by scanning the Ivanti Endpoint Manager Database for new (until now: unmanaged) operating systems and their build versions.

These Operating Systems and Builds discovered in your environment will be added to the list of
Unmanaged Operating Systems.

Unmanaged Operating Systems
This site is similar to the Distribution Packages site. Select one of the OS and click the Convert to Managed Operating Systems button to allow this OS to be used in SWD and OSD (optional).

Managed Operating Systems
OS in this list are always approved for SWD (Software Distribution) and can be approved for OSD
(Operating System Distribution) by using "Edit Selected Operating System". This is important if you want to do OS or software distributions. If you no longer need to distribute a specific OS any longer, just select it and click the "Set To Unmanaged" button.

If the Option Selectable for OS is checked you have to define a provisioning template that will be used for that specific OS during distribution.

Tipp:
A Custom Name can be used to rename your OS to something you can remember more easily.

Migration
Versions prior 4.2 had only one OS of each kind with no specific build number. They will be migrated in the newest version. A Windows 10 Version will become multiple if different build numbers are found. All OS related configurations will be taken over from the previous Windows 10 to all new Windows 10 Versions with build numbers. The software assignments will be migrated in the same way.
