1. About WOL

Wake on LAN (WOL) is a networking technology that allows computers in a sleep, hibernation, or powered-off state to be started remotely. is designed to wake up sleeping computers. A WoL request consists of a specially encoded "magic packet" that contains the MAC address of the target device rather than its IP address.

A standard WoL packet is sent as a directed broadcast and is typically not routed across subnet boundaries.

The Console uses an “IP-directed broadcast” on port 12287, which includes the target network address of the network in which the computer is located. This is beneficial because the customer can allow this IP-directed broadcast to be routed without forwarding general broadcast traffic to all subnets.


However, for security reasons network experts avoid to enable IP-directed broadcast because it is often used for Smurf denial-of-service-attacks.

To ensure a more secure setup, the network team can allow IP direct Broadcast for port 12287 and the source IP address of your core servers only.

Why can the EPM wake up computers without allowing IP-directed Broadcasts?
Ivanti provides a fallback to check if at least one workstation is available, running the Ivanti EPM Agent with the Targeted Multicast feature in the subnet of the client.

There is no API available to use this feature and the feature is slow and requires at least one computer online with the right configuration. Therefore we suggest you use a proper network configuration if you like to use WOL with the console.


2. How to access WOL


The WoL feature is available as a dedicated Home Button permission and can be assigned to users through Role Based Administration by the Admin on the admin page.
