Wake on LAN (WOL)

Modified on Wed, 10 May 2023 at 01:39 PM

Wake-ON-Lan is designed to wake up sleeping computers. A WOL request is a special encoded "magic packet" that contain the MAC address of the target device not having an IP address.

A classic WOL package is a direct broadcast package that is normally not routed to other subnets.

The console use a "IP directed broadcast" on port 12287 which include the target network address of the network in which the computer is suspected. This is beneficial, because the customer can allow this IP directed Broadcast to be routed without having the general broadcasts "spam" to all subnets.

Anyhow, for security reasons network experts don't like to enable IP directed broadcast because it is often used for smurf-denia-of-service-attacks.

To ensure a more secure setup, the network team can allow IP direct Broadcast for port 12287 and the source IP address of your core servers only.

A good reference for understanding WoL is this Cisco documentation

Why can the EPM wake up computer without allowing IP directed Broadcasts?
Ivanti use a fallback way, to check if at least one workstation is available, running the Ivanti EPM Agent with the Targeted Multicast feature in the subnet of the client.

There is no API available to use this feature and the feature is slow and require at least one computer online with the right configuration. Therefore we suggest du do a proper Network configuration if you like to use WOL with the console.
